NLP’s Machakos Retreat Signals Bold Break from Government and Opposition, Eyes 2027 Presidency.
The National Liberal Party (NLP) has officially declared total independence from both government and opposition, unveiling a bold vision to liberate Kenya from what it termed “political cartels masquerading as leadership.” The declaration was made during the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) retreat held from 16th to 17th August 2025 at Kinga Resort in Machakos County.
The meeting, which also served as an induction for newly appointed officials following the National Delegates Convention (NDC) held on 28th June 2025, marked a historic moment in the party’s evolution. Party officials described it as the beginning of a new chapter—one where NLP positions itself not merely as an observer in Kenya’s political scene, but as a serious contender for national leadership in the 2027 General Election.

Induction and Renewal of Leadership
The August retreat was the first official sitting of the restructured National Executive Committee since the NDC, where the party conducted a sweeping leadership reorganization. The induction sessions in Machakos were aimed at orienting the new officials on NLP’s liberal ideology, values of ethical governance, inclusivity, and its commitment to a citizen-centered political culture.
“The National Delegates Convention laid the foundation; this retreat is where we chart the roadmap,” said NLP Secretary General Omondi K’oyoo. “We are not just inducting leaders; we are inducting a new political consciousness that will drive Kenya out of decades of recycled failure.”

Breaking from Political Cartels
At the heart of the meeting was a resounding rejection of Kenya’s current political order. In a strongly worded statement, NLP denounced the entrenched political class for recycling dynastic alliances, tribal bargaining, and hollow promises.
“For decades, Kenyans have been betrayed by a political class that recycles itself. The same faces, the same impunity, the same exclusion. Enough is enough,” the party declared.
Comparing Kenya’s present political climate to the one-party era under KANU, NLP accused both government and opposition of being “bloated with impunity, drunk on patronage, and allergic to accountability.”

The Road to 2027: A People-Driven Alternative
The Machakos NEC resolved to field candidates in all upcoming by-elections, signaling readiness to test its strength at the grassroots before mounting a full-scale national campaign. Looking ahead, the party committed to presenting aspirants in every ward, constituency, and county during the 2027 General Election, culminating in the unveiling of its first presidential candidate.
“We will not endorse anyone. We are here to lead. We represent a new face of politics—uncompromised, unbought, and unafraid,” K’oyoo emphasized.
The party further underscored its intention to build a values-driven revolution anchored on transparency, economic fairness, and respect for individual freedoms. It called upon the youth, marginalized communities, and all Kenyans disillusioned by mainstream politics to rally behind its vision.

A National Awakening
NLP leaders framed the retreat not just as a political strategy session, but as the beginning of what they described as a national awakening.
This declaration is not a personal rebellion; it is a collective uprising, the statement read. “We are charting a new course where power belongs to the people—not dynasties, not billionaires, not political cartels.”
The retreat also outlined plans for capacity building within the party structures, strengthening grassroots mobilization, and enhancing internal governance to ensure accountability and inclusivity within NLP itself

Conclusion
As the dust settles in Machakos, analysts note that the National Liberal Party has signaled clear intent: it is no longer content being on the sidelines of Kenya’s political theater. With a newly inducted leadership team, a bold ideological stance, and a roadmap to 2027, NLP is positioning itself as a credible alternative to the political status quo.
Whether the party can translate this momentum into a formidable national movement remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—the battle lines have been drawn.
“This is not just a political declaration. It is a national awakening. Let us build a Kenya where leadership is earned, not inherited; where liberty is lived, not promised; where the people, not the powerful, define our destiny,” the party affirmed.
